Magnificent and exceedingly rare large white glazed potpourri vase and its cover, decorated with vertical bands of fish scales and Indian flowers in relief. Knop in the form of a large bud or seed pod.
This is undoubtedly the finest white Saint-Cloud vase in existence and just a fantastic design. We know of only two similar examples, one in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, but that one is covered in numerous fine black specks and its cover is seriously cracked (see photos). Another similar vase, with the piercing in the cover differently placed (and therefore not the pair to ours, but with the same provenance) has a broken and restuck cover. It was on the French art market in 2017. A similar but noticeably smaller vase (also damaged) is in a private collection in London.
